Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield tried to get GA to include a denunciation of Hamas.
The United Nations General Assembly voted to call for a ceasefire in Gaza on Tuesday, with 160 voting in favor, 23 countries abstaining from voting, and 10 countries voting against. Since the Islamic terrorist group Hamas launched an attack on Israeli civilians on October 7, the Israeli government has attacked the neighboring Gaza Strip, which Hamas governs.
Hamas broke the temporary cease-fire, in which hostages were being swapped for imprisoned Palestinians, with additional terror attacks in Israel. U.S. Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield encouraged the General Assembly to include a denouncing of Hamas in the resolution for its October 7 attack on Israel, but they did not.
The United States and Israel were among the nations who voted against the resolution calling for a ceasefire. “There are no war crimes more heinous than the atrocities Hamas committed,” said Israeli Ambassador Gilad Erdan. “And those that support this resolution are giving the terrorists a free pass.”
